Basic 4WD Certificate Course:
     An entertaining presentation of four wheel drive vehicle operation and recovery techniques. The course includes theory and practice, with detailed notes and a bit of fun.
     Theory sessions give an understanding of the technology involved in modern 4WD vehicles and recovery equipment. Discussion sessions based around real-life experiences impart knowledge on coping with challenging situations. Driving sessions allow participants to practice particular techniques taught in the course. These courses are run as either:

  1. Weekend course (suitable for Melbourne participants). Price, with minimum of 3 participants: $190, or
  2. i-Gain Quality Learning (Latrobe Valley) two two-hour evening discussion sessions followed by a day trip involving practical demonstrations. Price $165.

Topics covered include:
Vehicles and preparation: • low range • ground clearance • suspension • part-time and full-time 4WD • diffs and locks • ABS brakes • auto transmission • free wheel hubs • tyre patterns and sizes • simple mechanical checks and spares • petrol, diesel or LPG fuels • tyre patterns and sizes • snatch strap safety • tow point integrity • winches and snatch blocks • vehicle jacks • CB radios • roof racks and trailers.
Tackling tough trails: • mountain climbing signs of trouble • washaways • rock ledges and boulders • forward and reverse hill starts • fording rivers • rocks and holes and slippery banks • engine fans and ignition • snorkels and waterproofing • oil seals • wet brakes • mud and snow • momentum and gravity • wheel chains • south side of the mountain • black ice and alpine parking • sand • power, gears and tyre pressures • salt water • fallen trees • avoiding duco scratches and stone chips • reverse gear • tents, camping gear and fridges • packing, luggage and water.

Advanced 4WD Certificate Course:
     A course which covers all of the above (so the Basic course is not a pre-requisite) plus more detail on 4WD operation and recovery in extreme situations. This course is run as a residential weekend (self-cater motel style accommodation) including one evening session. Price $240 (non-participating partners/family $40 each) plus accommodation and Saturday night dinner.

Certificate is provided to participants on completion of these courses.
